Due to their high levels of nutrients, freshwater marshes are one of the most productive ecosystems on earth. They can sustain a vast array of plant communities that in turn support a wide variety of wildlife within this vital wetland ecosystem. As a result, marshes sustain a diversity of life that is disproportionate with their size. In addition to their considerable habitat value, non-tidal marshes serve to mitigate flood damage and filter excess nutrients from surface runoff.

Tidal marshes can be found along protected coastlines in middle and high latitudes worldwide. They are most prevalent in the United States on the eastern coast from Maine to Florida and continuing on to Louisiana and Texas along the Gulf of Mexico. Some are freshwater marshes, others are brackish (somewhat salty), and still others are saline (salty), but they are all influenced by the motion of ocean tides. Tidal marshes are normally categorized into two distinct zones, the lower or intertidal marsh and the upper or high marsh.

In saline tidal marshes, the lower marsh is normally covered and exposed daily by the tide. It is predominantly covered by the tall form of Smooth Cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora). The saline marsh is covered by water only sporadically and is characterized by Short Smooth Cordgrass, Spike Grass and Saltmeadow Rush (Juncus gerardii). Saline marshes support a highly specialized set of life adapted for saline conditions.

It is commonly asked when the peak of migration is at Horicon Marsh. Of course, that depends on which group or species of birds are being referenced. The best migration time to see the greatest variety of birds is from mid-April to mid-May, and mid-September through October. However, there is no one time when you can see all the birds of the marsh. By the time one group of birds is at its peak, others may have already departed or might not yet have even arrived. Therefore, to see the greatest variety of birds it requires several trips throughout the season and throughout the year in order to get a true feel for the diversity and abundance of wildlife that is attracted to and supported by Horicon Marsh.

After the northern nesting waterfowl have departed the marsh the great flocks of songbirds begin to reach the peak of their migration. From late April to the third week of May is the best time to watch and listen for the spring songbirds.

The lesson learned from this experience is that in spite of our best efforts to manage wildlife, there is nothing we can do to avoid these periodic, catastrophic events. However, like putting all of your eggs in one basket, when we crowd our threatened or endangered species into the last remaining suitable habitat we risk these kinds of losses from natural events. While our goal is to maintain a breeding population of herons and egrets at Horicon Marsh, we also need to think regionally in order to maintain a series of healthy rookeries. Just in case another such natural disaster should ever strike a nesting colony, we will assure that other populations will be able to maintain the species. Of course, we cannot manage to avoid severe storms, but we cannot confine wildlife to only a few islands of habitat and expect that they will last forever in an ever-changing natural environment.

The project team used the Adaptation Workbook to and the draft menu of Great Lakes Coastal Adaptation Strategies and Approaches to develop several adaptation actions for this project. One of the main outcomes of this discussion was altering the sequence of each restoration phase in the Bay, in order to reduce the vulnerability of restored marsh to climate change impacts. The three restoration phases planned for this project include:

This basin includes areas in the north central and northeast regions and includes the Orange Creek Public Small Game Hunting Area, and Orange, Lochloosa and Newnans lakes. The Orange Creek PSGHA comprises approximately 3,400 acres east of Highway 301. The area has specific regulations. Orange, Lochloosa and Newnans lakes, which lie west of Highway 301, have marshy areas that can provide attractive duck habitat depending on water levels. In years when hydrilla is abundant and growing to the surface, counts of ring-necked ducks have been as high as 3,000-5,000. Resident wood ducks and black-bellied whistling ducks use the lakes as well. There are several public and private access points.

Collectively, these two areas comprise 6,600 acres in the upper St. Johns River basin. These areas are managed by the FWC to provide high-quality habitat for waterfowl and other wetland wildlife. This area is open to hunting on Tuesdays and Saturdays only and requires a quota permit (except during youth hunts). Public access is controlled through the area headquarters. Call 321-726-2862 or refer to the T.M. Goodwin PSGHA regulations for more information.

Lake Okeechobee is one of Florida's more popular and historically acclaimed areas for duck hunting. Good hunting opportunities are still available but habitat quality has degraded because of water-level stabilization and high levels of nutrient input. This lake still attracts large numbers of wintering ducks, including ring-necked ducks and a variety of dabbling duck species. These birds primarily are found in the marshes along the western shore from Okeechobee to Moore Haven. Hunting pressure in this area can be high. Large flocks of scaup (up to 90,000) are often found in the middle, open-water portions of the lake but conditions make them difficult to hunt. Maps showing access points and other information may be obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Statewide regulations apply.

A new structural equation modeling approach to questions of the direction of causal flow between global and specific multidimensional measures of self-concept (SC) in two 2-wave, longitudinal studies demonstrated that (a) higher order factors were unable to explain relations among first-order factors at Time 1 (T1), at Time 2 (T2), or between T1 and T2; (b) T1 global SC had little effect on specific SC factors at T2 (a top-down model), but specific factors at T1 had even less effect on T2 global SC (a bottom-up model); and (c) many specific factors were more stable than global factors, but higher order factors were most stable. Results provide little support for top-down, bottom-up, or reciprocal models, instead arguing for a horizontal model in which each T2 SC factor is primarily a function of the matching T1 SC. This casts further doubt on the usefulness of hierarchical representations of SC.

Casa Mia's is my go to restaurant before going to a Orioles game, last Sunday I took a friend that was he's first time there, he got a chicken salad sandwich and said it's the best he ever had. My choice was their world famous cheese steak that was incredible. The young man who took my order was so friendly .

Over the past half century, human activity surrounding the Great Lakes basin has significantly degraded habitats and water quality, and as a result, many marsh bird populations are in steep decline, with some regional population declines as high as 80 percent in recent decades. The good news is that we know how to save them.
